The beginning of the school year was very busy. We celebrated another birthday. Alexis celebrated her birthday with us and we enjoyed cupcakes for her special day!

Writers Workshop
During writers workshop students are encouraged to illustrate and write a "small moment" story. These stories are about something that has happened to them. For example a lot of students "write" about the night before, birthday parties or holidays. Also during this time students listen to classical music to help them concentrate.

WORK STATIONS
Everyday students are engaged in work stations. These are independent activities where students are put in groups and are rotated to different activities. The activities are practice of skills that we have done together.

1. Get some school supplies for home, some suggestions are:
Scissors
Pencil
Glue Stick
Crayons
Keep all these materials in a box/pencil holder ect that your student has access to.
2. Ask your student on the way home or right when they walk in the door if they have homework.
3. If student is hungry give a light snack (for example: goldfish, cheez it's, apple slices) something that is light but won't spoil dinner.
4. Have your student do homework before they do ANYTHING else. This way it's still fresh in their minds and they then will have the rest of the evenings for activities that they would like to do.
5. Get your student used to putting back all the materials. School supplies put away and putting their folder (which comes to school everyday) in their backpack and sit by the door to be ready for the next day!
These are just suggestions that you may want to try at your house or with your child.
The most important thing is that your child gets into a routine of coming home, and doing homework. Remember this is going to take some time to get them used to this routine they are still rather young and have to get into a steady rhythm.
Story Telling.....
For writing time the students and I are focusing a lot on telling our "own" stories. When students get used to telling events that have actually happened to them, this will help them transfer the skill into actually writing small moments stories.
